* * * *

Houston could see Dustin was still worried. He was, too, but he felt better thinking that Dustin wouldn’t be alone in the forest. It had rained yesterday, and he hated thinking of Dustin having to sit on the wet ground with water dripping on top of him. He understood why Dustin had run and hidden, but it wasn’t right.

But Dustin’s actions had some logic. He didn’t want to go back to his clan, and whatever reason he had for that, it was obviously serious. Dustin appeared terrified of his father, which explained why he’d run as soon as he’d found out the man was here. He’d needed to protect himself and also the pack.

That was one of the reasons Houston was hopeful. Dustin was terrified, and there was no way to know how this entire thing would go, but Dustin cared about the pack enough to try to protect it. No matter how much he’d isolated himself over the weeks, it was clear he felt like he was part of the pack. Houston doubted Dustin wanted to leave, and not only because his chosen family was still here. He hoped his presence here was part of it, too, but he wasn’t about to ask. His heart couldn’t take another scare.

He was startled when he felt something brush against his fingers. Dustin was already moving back, taking his hand away, but Houston would have none of that. He snatched Dustin’s hand and linked their fingers together, squeezing lightly to tell Dustin he was okay with this. He’d just been surprised, but there was nothing he wanted more than to walk around the forest holding hands with the man he was falling in love with.

“I should probably tell you why I don’t want to go home,” Dustin murmured.

“It would be helpful, if anything, so we can come up with a plan to deal with your father, but you don’t have to do anything you don’t feel up for. If you don’t want to tell us, that’s fine.”

“I do want to tell you. You know about my father now, anyway.”

“Why didn’t you ever tell anyone else?”

Dustin shrugged. “I was trying to protect them. Especially before, when we still lived on the streets, it would have been too easy for my father to hurt Theo or any of the others in his attempt to get to me. I never would have forgiven myself if something had happened to them.”

Houston squeezed Dustin’s hand again. “That’s why you ran again when your father arrived, isn’t it? You’re trying to protect everyone, even if it means being on your own.”

“Whatever trouble my father is planning will be my fault.”

“No. It’s your father’s fault.”

“But he’s here for me.”

Houston stopped walking and turned to face Dustin. He was pale and looking everywhere but at Houston, but that wouldn’t do. Houston stepped closer, never letting go of Dustin’s hand, and cupped one of his cheeks. “Look at me,” he whispered.

When Dustin did, Houston smiled at him.

“You don’t want to go back to the clan,” Houston said.
